The top three desirable traits are reliability, warmth and fairness, according to a 1997 poll from The Journal of Personality.
We all know that those are fantastic, essential traits, but we will have to re-jig that priority list a little bit in light of any new information. If you want to live a long life, you should marry to an intelligent woman. The experts at the University of Aberdeen came to this conclusion, and found that men with intelligent wives were far less likely to suffer from degenerative problems like Alzheimer’s disease, which is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. The men who were studied had signs of brain damage that were visible through MRI scans, instead of those who married highly intelligent women did not display such symptoms.
Professor Lawrence Whalley, professor of mental health at the University of Aberdeen, said:“If you look at the kind of people who should have dementia but don’t show symptoms, they are highly intelligent people in high-powered jobs. They also have a lot of money in the bank.”
How does that work?
According to some studies, intellectual stimulation (that has been observed, was in the form of ‘cognitive activities’, for example, crossword puzzles, reading and visiting museums) wards off dementia.
On the other hand, the late Aberdeen study raises a very good point: what can provide better intellectual stimulation than one’s partner?
Women tend to care a lot more about spending time with their partner compared to men. Additionally, women like to converse much more than men.
Here is the real mind-blower
It was proved that during a successful conversation between two people, their brains literally sync up. This is a process called ‘neural coupling’. It is the basis for engaging conversation.
The listening brain starts to fire in a pattern which matches that of the speaker. It fires before the speaker’s brain, i.e., the person who is listening starts to anticipate what will be said next.
The stronger this connection becomes, the more these two people understand each other and the stronger their sense of understanding is.
